Mary Habila was a Nigerian physiotherapist whose name became nationally known following her sudden and controversial death at the country home of Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, in Uburu, Ebonyi State, in June 2026.

Until the incident, she had lived largely outside the public eye, pursuing a professional career in physiotherapy.

According to statements issued by the Minister’s media office, Habila was employed by the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu.

She, alongside another physiotherapist, Anita Baski, had reportedly been on secondment to the Federal Ministry of Works for approximately three years to provide physiotherapy services.

Her death on June 27, 2026, transformed her from an unknown healthcare professional into the subject of national attention.

Minister Umahi confirmed that she died at his residence and stated that emergency medical personnel and the police were immediately contacted after she was found unresponsive.

He also said he advised Habila’s family to permit an autopsy to establish the exact cause of death, adding that the family initially declined before he later renewed his call for one in the interest of transparency.

The circumstances surrounding her death have generated widespread public debate and media scrutiny.

Various media reports have raised questions about the events leading to her death and have reported allegations from unnamed sources.

However, many of these claims remain unverified, and no official investigation has publicly established the cause of death or attributed criminal responsibility to any individual.

The Ebonyi State Police have reportedly been investigating the incident.

Mary Habila’s death has sparked broader conversations in Nigeria about accountability, transparency in investigations involving public officials, and the need for forensic examinations in cases of unexplained deaths.
