Following his suspension for three months from the Senate over N3 trillion budget padding drama, Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi (PDP, Bauchi), has resigned as Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum.

He tendered his letter of resignation to the Secretary of the forum on Tuesday.

Ningi had been earlier suspended on the floor of the Senate for three months.

His ordeal followed his failure to defend his allegation in an interview with BBC Hausa at the weekend, that the 2024 budget had been padded by N3 trillion from some N25 trillion to N28 trillion.

In marshalling a defence to the accusations, Ningi said the English reporting of the interview he granted in Hausa language had been misquoted.

The motion for his suspension had been put to voice vote by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, after members debated the matter amidst a rowdy session on Tuesday.

While some members called for Ningi’s suspension, others said a mere apology would do.

In his letter of resignation, Ningi said his action became necessary in view of the development at the Senate on Tuesday.

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC, Ondo) had moved the motion for Ningi’s suspension for 12 months.

Jimoh raised allegations of criminal misinformation and breach of peace in the National Assembly and the country at large.

However, the Senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District, Asuquo Ekpenyong and Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, moved for an amendment to reduce the suspension to six and three months respectively.

Akpabio, who described Ningi’s offences as “grievous”, conducted a voice vote and the majority of the lawmakers voted in support of Ningi’s suspension for three months.

In an interview with BBC Hausa during the weekend, Ningi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was alleged to have said the 2024 budget was padded and that President Bola Tinubu is currently implementing two different budgets.

He allegedly said: “Apparently, we discovered N3 trillion was inserted into the budgets for projects without locations. This is the highest budget padding that happened in Nigerian history under Senator Akpabio’s watch.”
