Trump Arrives China Accompanied By Elon Musk, Others, As Xi Warns About Taiwan
To the sound of a cheering crowd, US President Donald Trump touched down in China for important talks with the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping.
Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met for two hours and 15 minutes after an elaborate arrival ceremony. Xi said the two countries “should be partners, not rivals,” while Trump said the U.S. delegation looked forward to discussing “reciprocal” trade.
Xi warned Trump that mishandling the Beijing-claimed island of Taiwan would cause “clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy,” Beijing’s foreign ministry said. As well as Taiwan, the talks were expected to focus on trade and the Iran war.
President Donald Trump is in Beijing for a highly anticipated two-day summit. It’s his first visit to China since 2017, during his first term.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping told Donald Trump their countries should be “partners rather than opponents,” while the US president called Xi a “great leader,” as they kicked off talks.
Xi told Trump that Taiwan “is the most important issue in China-US relations.”
Xi also met with US business leaders who traveled with Trump to China. Trump told Xi the CEOs, including Tim Cook and Elon Musk, came to China to “pay respects” and build business.
