By a unanimous affirmation of delegates at the National Convention, Julius Abure was today Wednesday reelected to retain his position as National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
His election comes despite opposition from the party’s mother organization, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which recently embarked on picketing of LP National Secretariat and state offices in resistance to Abure’s seat.
Chairman of the National Convention, Abia State’s Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu declared Abure the winner during the party’s National Convention that held earlier today in Nnewi, Anambra State.
Emetu made the declaration after LP delegates endorsed Abure by a unanimous voice vote.
Abure has faced severe opposition from the NLC team led by the President, Joe Ajaero.
The Labour centre demanded Abure’s resignation for alleged mismanagement of the party and for lack of transparency in running the party’s affairs.
Julius Abure took over as LP National Chairman in 2021 following the death of the pioneer leader, Comrade Abdukadir Abdulsalam.
An Edo-born legal practitioner, Abure had previously served as its National Secretary prior to his elevation.
His chairmanship has been challenged by some party members, especially Lamidi Apapa, the suspended Deputy National Chairman, who claimed to have removed Abure through a court order.
However, the Court of Appeal recently affirmed Julius Abure as the National Chairman.
He is also facing allegations of embezzlement of N3 billion belonging to the party, which was laid by the suspended National Treasurer of the party, Oluchi Opara.
