Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has taken a stand on the recent National Convention of the party that endorsed a second term for its embattled Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure.

Speaking for the first time on the event, Obi bared his mind on an X Space session hosted by Parallel Facts on Friday.

At the convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Wednesday, 27th March, Abure was re-elected for a second term, along with all the rest officers of the National Executive Council (NEC).

The parent organisation behind LP, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) rejected the result, while the Board of Trustees under Comrade Sylvester Ejiofor, subsequently announced its taking over of party affairs.

The former Anambra State Governor explained that he ignored the convention because the Abure-led exco failed to carry out wide consultations with key stakeholders of the party ahead of the event.

Obi said the right thing must be done to salvage the party.

“I am more passionate about building a new Nigeria than building a new Labour Party,” Obi said.

He also backed the call for a structure for the ‘Obidient’ movement woven around his brand name, saying: “It is the standard practice around the world where movements form themselves into blocs and are part of the political process.”
